Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better

Omaha Hi/Lo also known as Omaha 8 or Better is a split pot game which has been the fastest growing poker game in the world. You should already be familiar with Omaha Hi before attempting to play Omaha Hi/Lo as many of the rules and betting procedures are similar with a few important variations. Like Omaha Hi players start with four personal cards and share five "community" cards (which are dealt face-up in the center of the table). You have to use two of your four personal cards with three community cards to form your hand. However Omaha Hi/Lo includes an alternative method of winning where players can ‘qualify’ for the Lo (low) side of the pot and win half.

To qualify for the low hand you require a five-card hand with different numerical values from Ace through eight (with the Ace being the lowest). For example the best “low” hand is A, 2, 3, 4, 5. The winning "Low" hand goes to the player with the lowest high card. If two or more players have the same high card, the player with the second lowest card in their hand wins the low side of the pot.

Sequence of Game Play:

1. The dealer deals each player their own four cards face-down (pocket cards)
2. First betting round
3. The dealer turns over three community boardcards (the flop) face-up
4. Second betting round
5. The dealer turns over 1 more community boardcard (the turn)
6. Third betting round
7. Dealer turns over 1 final community boardcard (the river)
8. Final betting round
9. Showdown

At the showdown players MUST use exactly two of their pocket cards and three boardcards.

Players can use any two of their pocket cards with any three board cards for their high hand, and players can also use any two of their pocket cards with any three board cards for their low hand. It is possible to win both high hand and low hand!

Please check Roberts Rules Of Poker for a more complete discussion of the rules and for any irregularities from the above.

Omaha 8 or better is a game of Flushes. When playing hands stay away from “naked” A-2 combinations that have no back-up low. Always look for hands where the Ace is suited.
